How to spot a real discount in Israel's November sales: previous prices, delivery costs and the checks before checkout

A discount percentage does not tell you how much you actually save. Compare the same product over time, calculate its delivered cost and establish who is responsible if something goes wrong.

To decide whether a November deal is worthwhile, answer one practical question: what does it cost today to receive the exact product you want, on suitable terms, compared with real alternatives? A large percentage beside a crossed-out price does not answer it. Sometimes the saving is substantial; sometimes delivery, taxes or different warranty arrangements reduce it.

Start before the main sales days. Make a short list of things you actually need, record model numbers and set an acceptable total price. When Black Friday, Cyber Monday and other November advertisements arrive, you will have your own reference point. This guide provides general consumer information, not legal or tax advice for an individual case.

Start with the exact model's price history

Choose a specific product rather than a broad category. Storage capacity, size, model year, pack quantity and included accessories can change the comparison. Similar pictures do not establish that two listings contain the same item. Copy the complete model number and search for it separately, in Hebrew and English where useful.

Record prices at several shops on different dates, together with their conditions. A simple note, screenshot and date are enough to begin. If you use a comparison site or price-history service, check which retailers it covers, when its information was updated and whether delivery and coupons are included. A partial chart can help without documenting the entire market.

For a purely illustrative calculation, suppose you saw a product at NIS 400 a week before a sale. It now costs NIS 350, alongside a crossed-out NIS 500. The reduction from your recorded price is NIS 50, or 12.5%. The discount against NIS 500 is 30%, but it uses a different starting point. Neither percentage alone tells you whether another shop is cheaper.

If you have no historical record, do not fill the gap from memory or from the crossed-out figure. You can still compare today's available offers. Your conclusion would be that a price is competitive now, rather than necessarily the lowest it has ever been or will become.

What an Israeli sale should make clear

Section 15 of the Consumer Protection Law addresses announcements of special sales. In general, the seller must identify the goods or services included and excluded, their price at that business before the special sale, the discount rate or reduced price, and the conditions. Detailed presentation requirements vary with the promotion and advertisement, so read the qualifications relevant to your chosen item.

Ask what "before" refers to: a previous price at that shop, a recommended price, or another stated comparison. Do not assume a crossed-out figure necessarily represents the lowest price charged in the preceding month. Section 2 prohibits misleading consumers about material aspects of a transaction, including the normal, customary or previously charged price. The Consumer Protection and Fair Trade Authority also addresses inflated or fictitious reference prices.

For the price itself, the legal starting point is an inclusive price, covering VAT and payments consumers cannot practically avoid, subject to statutory exceptions. An attractive base figure does not replace an understanding of the amount you will be charged. Online, reach the order summary before confirming and inspect what has been added and what you can genuinely choose not to purchase.

Save the promotion's wording as well as its headline number. A discount restricted to club members, a particular card or a minimum quantity is different from an offer available to every shopper. Request written clarification of material uncertainties. If you suspect misleading conduct, records of the conditions and charge help when contacting the business and the consumer authority.

Compare the basket and conditions, not just the tag

Compare several retailers using the same model and package. Check whether the item is new, refurbished, ex-display or missing an accessory included elsewhere. Confirm that it can be delivered to your address and that the delivery date suits your needs. A good price on something that arrives too late does not solve the problem that prompted the search.

Calculate the final amount: the product, shipping, selected extras, installation where needed and payment terms. Test a coupon before confirming and check which items qualify. One percentage reduction followed by another on the remaining balance does not necessarily equal the sum of those percentages. Inspect the currency amount at checkout, rather than relying on the promotional promise.

Another illustrative example: an item costing NIS 300 plus NIS 40 delivery is more expensive than the same item at NIS 325 with delivery included, assuming equivalent conditions. Adding an unwanted product to qualify for free shipping can make the order more expensive still.

Also identify the actual seller. On a marketplace, the website's name is not always the name of the business selling the item or providing service. Record the business details, contact method and problem-resolution terms. A comparison becomes more useful when it includes conditions that matter to you, rather than merely the first offer in search results.

Calculate overseas taxes and delivery before paying

As checked on October 31, 2026, Tax Authority sources show a general personal-import exemption threshold of up to US$75, subject to conditions and exceptions. Do not rely on an older article about increasing the threshold or a shopping website's assurance. Shortly before ordering, check the Tax Authority's official personal-import tax calculator for the particular product.

When assessing the exemption threshold, separately itemized shipping and insurance are generally excluded from the value of the goods. However, when an import is taxable, these costs enter the taxable base under the relevant rules. The exemption does not apply in the same way to tobacco, alcohol and alcoholic beverages, and exclusions also cover certain electronic-cigarette products. Tax exemption does not remove product-specific import requirements.

Above US$75 and up to US$500, there is generally an exemption from customs duty, but not from VAT and any applicable purchase tax. The standard VAT rate is 18%. Above US$500, customs duty and other taxes may also apply according to classification. People sometimes use "customs" to mean every charge on a parcel, but different taxes and a courier's service fees are separate items.

In a calculation offered only as an example, an US$80 item with US$10 shipping has a US$90 VAT base, assuming no additional taxes. VAT at 18% is US$16.20, bringing the amount to US$106.20 before possible fees and currency conversion. Tax is not charged only on the US$5 above the exemption threshold.

Check whether the shop collects taxes in advance, what that collection covers and what might be payable on delivery. Keep an invoice showing the genuine purchase price. Do not assume artificially dividing an order creates an exemption: the Personal Import Order treats shipments sent by the same supplier to the same importer within 72 hours as one shipment.

Check the warranty and import route in detail

Ask who provides the warranty, where service is available and how an item reaches a repair facility. Official imports, parallel imports and personal imports involve different arrangements, but the label alone does not explain the service. Request the warranty certificate and the name of the responsible provider, checking that the terms cover your exact model.

Israel's warranty and after-sales service regulations cover, among other products, new electrical, electronic and gas goods costing more than NIS 150. They generally provide for a year of warranty, with product-specific provisions and exceptions. This does not mean every product ordered from every overseas website comes with a year of local servicing. For direct overseas purchases, establish whether using the warranty requires international return shipping and who pays.

If your concern is cancellation after purchase, consult the site's guide to canceling an online purchase. The aim here is to compare offers properly beforehand. A promise that returns are possible does not remove the need to check suitability, shipping costs and conditions before ordering.

Countdown timers, scarce stock and common comparison mistakes

A countdown or "only two left" notice may describe a genuine limitation, but neither proves that the price is good. If a timer restarts after expiring, or a stock message remains unchanged across repeated visits, there is a reason to examine the claim. These are warning signs, not automatic proof of an offense or fictitious inventory.

The useful response is to return to your needs list and acceptable price. Do not skip seller or warranty checks because the page creates urgency. An offer with an unclear model, cost or service arrangement does not become clearer because the screen says one minute remains.

Common comparison mistakes include using another model's price, forgetting shipping, missing coupon conditions and adding products simply to increase a discount. A practical way to catch them is to write down why each item is needed and what it would cost to order alone. Savings should be measured against spending on an existing need, rather than the advertised reduction on an unplanned basket.

A short checklist before checkout

  1. Confirm the exact model, condition and necessary accessories.
  2. Compare your recorded prices with several available offers on equivalent terms.
  3. Read the discount's reference price, eligibility conditions and exclusions.
  4. Calculate the delivered cost, including relevant shipping, taxes and fees.
  5. Identify the seller, warranty provider and route for resolving problems.
  6. Save the offer, order summary and invoice, and decide without relying on the timer.

If an answer is missing, pause and clarify it before confirming. Passing on a purchase is a reasonable decision when the price does not suit you or the need is unclear. The aim in November is to receive something useful at a price and on terms you understand.
