Infrared hair removal: what exactly is it?

In recent years, we have heard a great deal about infrared hair-removal treatments offered alongside laser hair removal. Although the term infrared is familiar, many of us do not really understand how it works or what it means. This article takes a closer look at the workings of this advanced technology and how it ultimately removes unwanted hair.

What exactly is infrared?

Infrared devices produce light rays with varying wavelengths. Among these rays, one infrared ray remains stable and unchanged. When the practitioner directs the devices toward the skin and hair, powerful flashes of light are emitted and converted into heat. This heat energy reaches the hair follicle, warms it and eventually stops its growth, effectively destroying it. After a number of treatments that varies from person to person, the result can be smooth, well-groomed skin.

How is infrared hair removal performed?

Infrared hair removal is very similar to laser hair removal. It involves a series of treatments, usually averaging between seven and 10 sessions. At each appointment, the patient enters the treatment room and lies on the treatment bed. The practitioner first shaves the area where the hair will be removed, just as in laser hair removal. A numbing gel is then applied and covered with plastic film. After a short wait, treatment begins: the film is removed and a cooling gel is applied to prevent burns and heat. The practitioner passes the infrared device over the treatment area several times. A soothing cream is applied afterward.

An infrared hair-removal session takes between half an hour and an hour, depending on the area treated. Afterward, the patient will feel mild discomfort in the treated area, a kind of tingling or pins-and-needles sensation. Slight redness may also occur. Treatment is repeated several times over a number of cycles, according to hair type, skin tone and the area being treated, to ensure the best possible results.

Infrared hair removal compared with laser hair removal

While infrared technology gradually makes its mark on the aesthetics industry, many people still prefer laser hair removal, the familiar, safe and often less expensive method. What, then, is the difference between infrared technology and laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal suits people with black or brown hair growth but is ineffective for people with red or blond hair. Although infrared hair removal is unsuitable for particularly light hair, it can be effective for some people in this group, so this option is worth discussing during an assessment at an aesthetic medicine clinic.

It also suits darker skin, whereas laser hair removal will not always be effective for people with especially dark skin. Its main advantage is fewer side effects such as infection and burns, because many clinics take special precautions, including cooling machines that ensure side effects are reduced.
